What is IES LM-82?

IES LM-82 is a new standard for certification of Integral LED lamps and light engines by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program. It is designed to unify measurement of light sources regardless of underlying technology and to promote the replacement of A Lamp ("Edison"-type) fixtures with a new standard known as GU24. Orb Optronix provides IES LM-82 testing services for LED light engines and Integral LED lamps.

According to the ANSI/IES RP-16-2010 standard, an LED Light Engine is defined as "an integrated assembly comprised of LED packages (components) or LED arrays (modules), LED driver, and other optical, thermal, mechanical and electrical components. The device is intended to connect directly to the branch circuit through a custom connector compatible with the LED luminaire for which it was designed and does not use an ANSI standard base."

Under the same standard, Integral LED Lamps are "an integrated assembly comprised of LED packages (components) or LED arrays (modules), LED driver, ANSI standard base and other optical, thermal, mechanical and electrical components. The device is intended to connect directly to the branch circuit through a corresponding ANSI standard lamp-holder (socket)."

The IES LM-82 standard will allow manufactures to certify designs for lighting that meet the government requirements for commercial and residential use in the replacement of a variety of lighting solutions, including new types of lighting solutions and the gradual replacement of incandescent bulbs. IES LM-82 is the "Approved Method for the Characterization of LED Light Engines and Integral LED Lamps for Electrical and Photometric Properties as a Function of Temperature" or, essentially, IES LM-79 as a function of temperature.

IES LM-82 measures the luminous flux of LED light engines using AC power sources, unless the device is designed specifically for direct current.

PAR and MR-16 lamps can be measured using a Type-C Goniometer to provide full spectral data and luminous flux of the lamp.

All lamp types can be tested for Lifetime Luminance using the same specification provided for equivalent Compact Fluorescent Lighting.

How can Orb Optronix support your IES LM-82 testing initiatives?
